The following Shocks and Struts video is presented by Neighbors Automotive:
A loss of stability and vehicle control can compromise your vehicle’s safety and the safety of the passengers who ride with you. It’s important for drivers to understand that shocks and struts play a critical role in their vehicle’s safety.
Shock and Struts Facts:
A shock absorber is a unit in which spring & bump stopper are arranged concentric (rather coaxial) with the damper to save space required for seperate installation of each.
A strut is a coil-over-shox with additional degrees of freedom for steering the wheel (provided by a bearing which partially replaces a ball joint) and articulation of the wheel (provided by the top mount which doubles in as the upper wishbone / control arm).
For vehicles produced in the last few decades, shock absorbers can be classified into two basic types - individual or stand-alone shocks that attach to the vehicle suspension and frame, and shock-absorber units (or cartridges) integrated into a suspension strut - technically, a MacPherson or Chapman strut. Bear in mind that some cars have struts in the front and individual shocks in the rear. If this is the case, you can replace the rear shocks, but the front struts are better left to a professional.
Shocks and struts do not require replacing at specific mileage intervals like filters or spark plugs, but they do wear out and eventually have to be replaced. How long a set of original equipment shocks will last is anybody's guess. Some original equipment shocks may be getting weak after only 30,000 or 40,000 miles. Struts usually last upwards of 50,000 or 60,000 miles.
Shocks and struts are generally replaced in pairs -- though this isn't absolutely necessary if only one shock or strut is leaking or has suffered damage at a low mileage.
